AMUR AMUR AMUR…we are in love!

I have fallen in love with the NYC based brand AMUR. They came on my radar when I was on the hunt for an Oscars dress, although the brand provides a complete ready to wear range of separates too (and have just launched their Pre-Fall 2018 Collection). Sadly, my bump’s proportions did not allow for me to fit into any of the brands gorgeous pieces for my red carpet moment even though I wore some of them for our pre-Oscar events. The brand’s name stands for A Mindful Use of Resources (AMUR) and was born from the concept that great style does not have to come at the expense of our environment. In the words of creative director Sofia Shannon “Nature is the ultimate luxury.” The interplay between creativity and the environment is essential to her worldview and what you can expect to find from the brands’ offering are sustainably sourced materials fitting effortlessly into a modern urban lifestyle. Tailoring is always sharp and considered. (more…)

My gorgeous dress for tonight is from NYC brand AMUR! 10 POC Artists you should get to know

I will always remember visiting Pantheon – Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres in Rome, Italy, (a former Roman temple, now a church on the site of an earlier temple) and seeing this stunning painting earlier this year. I was surprised at how emotional I felt seeing the two black women in the painting at the back. It made me think about artists of colour and how I would have loved to see more of this kind of work growing up in Cambridge. So here is a post featuring POC artists you might want to be aware of, if inspired-diversity floats your boat.

Harmonia Rosales

Based in Chicago, artist Harmonia Rosales’ inspiration arises from living life as a woman of colour. She describes her art as being born out of “a combination of my love for history, thirst for endless new knowledge, and dedication to social action.” I have been following her work online for a while (@Honeiee), falling in love with her incredible reimagining of the classic Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. To keep up with updates, you can subscribe to her mailing list at harmoniarosales.com. I posted about her here.

Jurell Cayetano

Painter @turnjurell wows with post-impressionist portraits. Working with gouache and colored pencil, fine artist Jurell Cayetano creates post-impressionist style portraits that delightfully employ elements of synthetism and cloisonnism (a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours) techniques. Bespoke your world

My journey with designing started with customising pieces, I used to pull items from my sisters’ wardrobes (with or without their consent) and add beads, trim and embellishments to them, creating an (almost) unrecognisable piece. A few weeks ago I posted this, about how my mother always used to make unique outfits for my two sisters and I, and how wearing something I knew no one else would have would always made me feel unique and quite badass. It is because of this early, personal journey with personalisation (excuse the pun) and bespoke fashion that I love everything Bespoke Your Work stands for.

Apparently the experiences you remember the most are ones that surprise you, and when I was invited to an evening of personalised luxury at Cafe Royal Hotel with Bespoke Your World, I had no idea what to expect. Actually, that is not entirely true, I expected to be besieged with designers selling luxury, but I didn’t expect to connect with the soul of the brands so much, simply because of how the event was cleverly set up to tell each and every brands’ story.
