“I am thrilled to wear @chinelobally for the 94th Annual Academy Awards.
The black gown is made from @tencel_global and features the beaded symbol of Sankofa. As a British born Ghanaian on a journey of self discovery this concept felt like the perfect symbol to collaborate with my Nigerian sister at the design helm. Sankofa means “return and get it”, a symbol of the importance of learning from the past. Sankofa is a Ghanaian akansha African symbol system, one of eight that Africans used to communicate with one another. “Look to the past to enlighten the future,” it means. Sankofa is a bird that looks to be flying forward while looking back. It implies that the past incorporates into the future. Go back and get it. A symbol of the wisdom of learning from the past to build for the future. From the Akan proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri,” meaning, “It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind).”
Here is to another year.”
